Prints and Posts

So I have my first “Gallery” showing at a local coffee house. If you are around, drop by Chapman Coffee House in Orange next to Chapman College on Glassell and Walnut.

Its much more of a “show your art and help decorate the walls” but I’ll take it. For the printing, I used MPIX for the first time. I have used Bay Photo in the past and have been very happy with them but MPIX has a metallic paper that just sounded too cool not to try.

I exported about twenty images out of Lightroom and uploaded them to MPIX. The Java loader is very easy to use and unlike the POS loader that Facebook uses, it does not seem to mind if I use FLickr images as a source file or not. I made a gallery and picked out my images for standoffs and metallic paper. I did all this at 4:30AM and placed my order. By 5pm the next day, I had ALL my prints in my hands. And the metallic paper is gorgeous with the right images. You need saturated colors and strong images since the paper is very reflective with a sheen to it when it hits the light. A friend looking at the images said they had almost a 3d look to them which is true.

The quality of the prints was very good but they trimmed off some of the prints which cost me my signature line on some images. Even with the print sized specifically for the 10×10 or 8×12 etc, they oversize the print slightly. Lesson learned. I wish MPIX tied into SmugBug so I could offer the metallic paper to customers without my having to use MPIX’s ROES. Maybe someday.

So in a nutshell, MPIX has killer paper with a super delivery time and decent prices. The QA was ok, a couple of my standoffs were dinged and I wish they made it VERY clear to how is trimmed for the bleed but they are small complaints.

We dont bounce as well as we used to

OK, not so much photography except my plate removal surgery ruined my chance of playing in the worldwidephotowalk this year 🙁  I really thought yesterday I could muscle through it today for a two hour walk, even got the Doc to change out the dressings on Friday instead of waiting till Monday. That was till I could not get to sleep till 1am and even then, very strange dreams. Ever since the surgery, my sleep has been bad, not restful at all.

So whats a person to do? Play with Lightroom of course 🙂  I had a “gallery show” coming up at a local coffee house  called:

Chapman Coffee House

505 N Glassell Street
OrangeCA 92867

Nice plan, good coffee and good rice balls (???)  No, I’m not telling the story, you gotta go there to get it.

Back to Lightroom, I found out I was not able to sort on images that are “broken” or in other words, LR is unable to find the original image. It would be the same thing as putting the images on a removable drive and then removing it after importing the images. You can see them but not edit them in LR. Seems to me to be a bit of an oversight.

Other fun news is that  the Kodak Zi6 pocket “Flip type” of video recorder actually works pretty well. At least for 120 bucks it does well and yes, even in HD 720. It needs image stabilization in a bad way but maybe next time. Rechargable batteries work but not for long. The device is sensitive to the 1.2 volts dropping much below that. The normal alkaline batteries at 1.5 volts will last a considerable amount of time longer.

Other news?  I dumped Backblaze as a backup solution. Its Mac application went stupid too many times and when it does, I have to reboot AND almost always have to spend time repairing permissions and whatnot since it’s a power off,  not a clean reboot. So I canceled my account and nobody there seemed to care enough to even send a form letter. I keep telling people that the Amazon S3 services is the best bet and after 2 years, nobody has done it better yet.

Long Lost Battery

Damn Lithium batteries are expensive for any laptop but more so for the Mac. So I had a battery die on me a year ago. So whats the story you ask? Well, I had tried to get the battery rebuilt by a company that specializes in such matters and the cost would have been about half of a normal replacement with more juice as a bonus.

I sent my 80 dollar payment to batteryrefill.com via PayPal (who turned out to be useless) and they sent me a prepaid address via email. I shipped my battery for my Macbook Pro off to them and waited. And waited.. and waited. I sent several emails to them, a few phones calls and the story was “the cells were backordered, the techs are back logged” etc..etc. So after waiting 3 months or so, I went to PayPal to get my money back and they blew me off. I waited “too long” to file a claim and they could care less that I was trying to work with the vendor first. First lesson? Dont use PayPal, my normal credit cards do not have a problem with me disputing a non-delivered  item. After 6 months of hounding them, I gave up and wrote off my 80 bucks as a sad lesson and just spread the word that I was ripped off.

So imagine my surprise almost a year to the day when I get an email saying my battery has been shipped. Huh? Sure enough a battery shows up today and it looks like a brand new Apple battery. No marks of any kind to tell me it’s been apart and the apple stickers are still intact on some of the seams. It’s not MY battery since my battery had some pry marks where I almost took it apart on my own.

So what the heck is going on? an attack of conscious on someone’s part? A rebuild or just a rebadge new battery? No idea. I’m charging it now to see if it works at all. If it works, I happy to finally have gotten a new battery but I’m annoyed that it took an entire YEAR without any communication from the vendor.

Edit: So here what I have learned so far. After testing and even calibrating the battery, it would only last 1.5 hours and showed about 3500mAh of battery capacity. I thought it felt light when I swapped them so I weighed it. The normal pack weighs 16 oz and this one weights 11. So there is a five oz difference. Now I looked up the part number and it I think what I have is a knock off of the original battery pack for the original MBPs. This pack has the right P/N but is missing the apple logo. But the P/N is for the OLD batteries that were recalled months ago. Maybe batteryrefill.com got a deal on NOS batteries that were supposed to be scrapped out.

So while I got a battery for my 80 dollars, I did not get 80 dollars worth of battery, I got about 20 dollars worth and even then, it’s questionable to how safe the damn thing is.

Do NOT use batteryrefill.com and use my experience with them as a warning.
